OK, it's December now, and whether we want to admit it or not, many of us are starting to worry about where we might be come the dreaded New Year's Eve. And no one worries about this more than the singleton.
The rest of the year (bar Valentine's of course, which evokes similar dread) the singleton trundles along, dipping in and out of the dating scene, getting trolleyed with mates and generally leading a life of riley. But there's something about New Year's that makes you long for the comfort of being in a secure dating situation - that makes you long not to have to make plans alone. Because let's face it, however many mates we have, if those mates are in relationships, they generally disappear off the face of the earth come the New Year.
So if you do decide to fly solo, what might you do? There are tonnes of events for singletons on New Year's - it's a time when the dating services really come into their own. But if you think that'll make you feel like a bit of a sad sack, why not opt for a night of self-pleasure? After all, you're the most important person in this equation; think about staying in, popping the champers, and toasting the undoubted dating success that's going to make 2010 the Year of You.
So, at the risk of sounding like an episode of Loose Women, here's the plan. It's 7pm, you've got the bubbly in the fridge, and a cupboard full of edible treats. Don't scrimp here (just think how much dosh you'd spend out on the town): smoked salmon; steak; cream cakes, whatever floats your boat should be on the menu.
You have a long, gorgeous, indulgent soak and emerge goddess-like in a cloud of perfumed steam. Wrap yourself up cosily, but remember you still need to look good - there's nothing worse than catching sight of yourself looking like a raddled Deidre Barlow when you're about to beckon the new year in. Now's the time for the first glass of champers - and to fire up the computer. Because there's no better time to put together your new internet dating profile than on a night that's all about resolutions...
Spend some time looking at the more successful online dating profiles, and work out what it is that makes certain profiles more popular than others. And check out what different dating services are available - it's not a case of one size fits all. If you want lasting love, find an online dating service that welcomes people looking for commitment. If it's just a bit of casual dating you're after, check out the adult dating sites. Regardless, this is a night to dream, and to think of the romance that awaits you in the new year.
Hopefully you'll be ready to post your profile in a few days' time (don't post it then and there - it's akin to being one of those people who file their tax return on Christmas Day). Then sit back, finish the champers, scoff the cake and toast the bells at midnight, safe in the knowledge that you're strong enough to enjoy your own company on New Year's Eve - and you have a plan for the year ahead.
